There are now all kinds of options to give your RaspberryPi a personal touch. From self-designed and then 3D printed housings to self-soldered expansion boards, there is actually almost nothing that is not possible.<\/p>\n

On the software side, too, there are all sorts of options to customize the appearance and functions as you see fit. One option is to set up a personal login screen - i.e. the first message you see after logging in.<\/p>\n

The following article explains how to set up this \"Message of the Day\" (the actual name of the view at the start of the login screen).<\/p>\n

Log in to the RaspberryPi via SSH<\/h2>\r\n

To start, you must first log in to the Rasp Pi with Putty via SSH. How to do this is in the article RaspberryPi - Control the RaspberryPi via SSH<\/strong><\/em><\/a> described.<\/p>\r\n

Create \"Message of the Day\" file<\/h2>\n

First you have to create the message you want to display. To do this, create a directory - in which the file will later be created - with the following command:<\/p>\n

Now you have to make the file executable. This can be done with the following command:<\/p>\n

Deactivate static \"Message of the Day\"<\/h2>\n
To display the welcome message you have just defined, you must deactivate the old message - which is set up \"ex works\" on every RaspberrPi. To do this, open the file:<\/p>\n

In the open file, navigate to the line that begins with \"PrintMod ...\".<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Edit PAM configuration<\/h2>\n
Now you have to edit your PAM configuration. To do this, open the file:<\/p>\n

In the last step you have to specify that you want your new welcome message to be displayed when you start.<\/p>\n

Perform a restart<\/h2>\n
In order for this new file to be adopted - and to test the whole thing - you can restart with<\/p>\n
sudo reboot<\/pre>\n

The output doesn't work :\/ \u2013 What to do?<\/h2>\n
If you get an error message after booting up instead of the welcome message, then this is most likely due to the formatting of the myotd file being mixed up.<\/p>\n

This is what one (or more) error message(s) could look like, for example.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
The problem with formatting is that your RaspberryPi may interpret what is written differently than it is presented to you.<\/p>\n
To fix this you have to open the file again:<\/p>\n
sudo nano ~\/motd\/mymotd<\/pre>\n

Now you have to edit the file so that it looks exactly like the photo below.<\/p>\n

In order to be able to test your changed file - without having to restart every time, you can also enter the following command (if you are in the motd folder):<\/p>\n

If you have edited the file correctly, it should now look like this.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
The example \"Message of the Day\" above also shows you some current system data. You can see what the resource utilization on your RaspberryPi looks like immediately after logging in and react if necessary.<\/p>\n
