In recent years, the ESP8266 has increasingly become the universal forest and meadow microcontroller that can be used in almost every project. Otherwise, you can only find a microcontroller for ~2\u20ac including WiFi and with plenty of memory in its big brother, the ESP32.<\/p>\n

Dabei gibt es den ESP8266 in verschiedenen Versionen. Die gel\u00e4ufigste, weil zertifizierte, Version ist dabei die Version ESP-12 mit all ihren Untervarianten. Durch diese kann man fast jeden GPIO und auch den ADC nutzen, was bei anderen Versionen nicht immer der Fall ist. Einen „Nachteil“ hat diese Version aber…<\/p>\n

A bright blue LED on the ESP's PCB is practical to see whether the ESP is being supplied with energy. However, in projects in which the ESP8266 should be installed as invisibly as possible, this is quite annoying.<\/p>\n

But there are ways to get rid of this LED. How this works and what you need to pay attention to is described in the following article.<\/p>\n

The software solution<\/h2>\n

Die einfachere L\u00f6sung des „LED-Problems“, f\u00fcr die Ihr weder L\u00f6tkolben noch anderes Werkzeug ben\u00f6tigt, ist die Software-L\u00f6sung. Denn ein Blick in den Schaltplan eines ESP8266 in der Version 12 zeigt, dass die Kathode unserer Problem-LED(Im Schaltplan „LED1“) \u00fcber einen Widerstand auf den GPIO02 gef\u00fchrt ist. Und dort wo ein GPIO ist, ist auch eine Schaltm\u00f6glichkeit per Software. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Zu beachten ist dabei, dass die Schaltlogik dieser LED invertiert ist, weil die LED mit Ihrem „Minuspol“ an den GPIO angeschlossen ist. Das hei\u00dft bei einem HIGH-Pegel an GPIO02 wird die LED ausgeschaltet, bei einem LOW-Pegel dagegen eingeschaltet. Dies muss man beim schalten des GPIO2 ber\u00fccksichtigen.<\/p>\n

If you program your ESP8266 yourself using the Arduino IDE, the following code is enough to deactivate the LED.<\/p>\n

Dazu m\u00fcsst Ihr euch lediglich in das WebMen\u00fc von ESPEasy einloggen und im Reiter „Hardware“ in der Sektion „Wifi Status LED“ den richtigen GPIO – im Falle der ESP-12 also GPIO-2 – einstellen. Der Haken bei „Inversed LED“ muss dabei gesetzt sein, da die LED wie oben beschrieben mit einer invertierten Logik gesteuert wird. Vergesst nicht die Einstellung zu speichern indem Ihr den „Submit“ Button bet\u00e4tigt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The hardware solution<\/h2>\n
Die Hardware-L\u00f6sung ist die L\u00f6sung Eurer Wahl, wenn Ihr die LED deaktivieren aber trotzdem den GPIO02 zur Interaktion mit anderer Hardware nutzen wollt. Dabei wird die LED einfach ausgel\u00f6tet. Gerade der GPIO02 bzw. D4 wird auf Wemos D1-Mini-Boards – zumindest von mir – gerne verwendet, da er direkt neben den „5V“- und „GND“-Pins liegt. Einziger Nachteil: Die LED wird dabei meistens zerst\u00f6rt, was aber in den meisten F\u00e4llen zu verschmerzen ist.<\/p>\n

You can find the LED on the front left corner between the housing shield (silver rectangle) and the PCB antenna (gold curved line on the PCB).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You can now unsolder the LED with a soldering iron. To do this, heat the left one alternately for approx. 10 seconds...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

...and right contact of the LED. The LED heats up completely until you can push it off the soldering pads by gently pressing the soldering iron against the LED housing. Most of the time the LED breaks and shatters during this step. But that's not bad. The individual parts can be easily removed with a soldering iron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

If the LED is removed the whole thing should look like this.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Then check again that the two soldering pads are not short-circuited\/connected by solder residue. This is very important because otherwise the GPIO2 will be at a constant HIGH level and could therefore prevent it from being used as a GPIO.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
This is admittedly the most radical solution. At the same time, it is also the only solution to deactivate the LED if you want to use the GPIO02 for other outputs at the same time.<\/p>\n
