In recent years, the ESP8266 has increasingly become the universal forest and meadow microcontroller that can be used in almost every project. Otherwise, you can only find a microcontroller for ~2\u20ac including WiFi and with plenty of memory in its big brother, the ESP32.<\/p>\n

The ESP8266 is available in different versions. The most common version, because it is certified, is the ESP-12 version with all its sub-variants. This allows you to use almost every GPIO and also the ADC, which is not always the case with other versions. However, this version has one \u201cdisadvantage\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

A bright blue LED on the ESP's PCB is practical to see whether the ESP is being supplied with energy. However, in projects in which the ESP8266 should be installed as invisibly as possible, this is quite annoying.<\/p>\n

But there are ways to get rid of this LED. How this works and what you need to pay attention to is described in the following article.<\/p>\n

The software solution<\/h2>\n

The simpler solution to the \u201cLED problem\u201d, for which you don\u2019t need a soldering iron or other tools, is the software solution. A look at the circuit diagram of an ESP8266 in version 12 shows that the cathode of our problem LED (\u201cLED1\u201d in the circuit diagram) is connected to the GPIO02 via a resistor. And where there is a GPIO, there is also a switching option via software. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

It should be noted that the switching logic of this LED is inverted because the LED is connected to the GPIO with its \u201cnegative pole\u201d. This means that with a HIGH level at GPIO02 the LED is switched off, while with a LOW level it is switched on. This must be taken into account when switching the GPIO2.<\/p>\n

If you program your ESP8266 yourself using the Arduino IDE, the following code is enough to deactivate the LED.<\/p>\n

If, on the other hand, you happen to use ESPEasy as the \u201coperating system\u201d for the ESP8266, you can use the following, already integrated function.<\/p>\n

To do this, all you have to do is log into the ESPEasy web menu and set the correct GPIO - in the case of the ESP-12, GPIO-2 - in the \u201cHardware\u201d tab in the \u201cWifi Status LED\u201d section. The check mark next to \u201cInversed LED\u201d must be checked because the LED is controlled with inverted logic as described above. Don\u2019t forget to save the setting by clicking the \u201cSubmit\u201d button.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The hardware solution<\/h2>\n
The hardware solution is the solution of your choice if you want to deactivate the LED but still use the GPIO02 to interact with other hardware. The LED is simply unsoldered. The GPIO02 or D4 in particular is often used on Wemos D1 mini boards - at least by me - because it is located right next to the \u201c5V\u201d and \u201cGND\u201d pins. The only disadvantage: The LED is usually destroyed, but in most cases this can be tolerated.<\/p>\n

The Wemos D1 mini board, for example, also uses an ESP8266 ESP-12 with an integrated LED.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You can find the LED on the front left corner between the housing shield (silver rectangle) and the PCB antenna (gold curved line on the PCB).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You can now unsolder the LED with a soldering iron. To do this, heat the left one alternately for approx. 10 seconds...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
\"\"
...and right contact of the LED. The LED heats up completely until you can push it off the soldering pads by gently pressing the soldering iron against the LED housing. Most of the time the LED breaks and shatters during this step. But that's not bad. The individual parts can be easily removed with a soldering iron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

If the LED is removed the whole thing should look like this.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Then check again that the two soldering pads are not short-circuited\/connected by solder residue. This is very important because otherwise the GPIO2 will be at a constant HIGH level and could therefore prevent it from being used as a GPIO.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
This is admittedly the most radical solution. At the same time, it is also the only solution to deactivate the LED if you want to use the GPIO02 for other outputs at the same time.<\/p>\n
