HowTo: Determine latitude and longitude of any position with GoogleMaps

There are a few cases where you need to find out the geographical coordinates of a particular location. For example, to be able to calculate exact sunrise and sunset times at a specific location.

To find out these coordinates, you could of course drive to the location in question and then take the coordinates from your own GPS position. But it can also be done more easily and even from the comfort of your own couch.

How you can find the coordinates of any place in the world using Google Maps is described in this article.

Find desired position

In order to get the coordinates of a desired location, you must first search for the location you are looking for in Google Maps. In this example we want to find out the coordinates of the German Reichstag.

So open Google Maps using the link https://www.google.com/maps visited.

Show coordinates

Once you have your desired location in the map view, you now have to right-click on it.

In dem sich öffnendem Kontextmenü klickt Ihr dann auf „Was ist Hier?“.
This will cause an info box to appear at the bottom in which the coordinates of the selected location are already displayed.
After you have clicked on the coordinates in the info box, they will be displayed in the search field area at the top left. Here the coordinates can be easily copied out by marking and copying.

Der Längengrad(engl. longitude) ist dabei die Zahl mit dem „E“ dahinter. In diesem Fall also: 13°22’34,0″E
Der Breitengrad(engl. latitude) ist dabei die Zahl mit dem „N“ dahinter. In diesem Fall also: 52°31’07.5″N

Coordinates can be specified in different systems. However, the conversion is easy to do using online tools. You can find a simple converter, for example, at https://rechneronline.de/geo-koordinaten/.

Have fun with the project

I hope everything worked as described for you. If not or you have questions or suggestions please let me know in the comments. I will then add this to the article if necessary.
Ideas for new projects are always welcome. 🙂

PS Many of these projects - especially the hardware projects - cost a lot of time and money. Of course I do this because I enjoy it, but if you think it's cool that I share the information with you, I would be happy about a small donation to the coffee fund. 🙂
