HowTo: Tasmota – WS2812 light chain to build yourself

From the construction of the World Map Lamp I still had a few plastic lamp housings over. These lay long lonely on the shelf around, until I came up with the idea to build a small RGB light chain with WS2812 LEDs.

The great thing about the WS2812B LED's is that you can control the color and brightness of each LED. So you can use the light chain as a relaxed background lighting, as Christmas lighting or as a party light chain. The color of the LED's can be adjusted as desired.

How you can build your own WS2812B LED light chain is described in the following article. If you don't have any plastic lamp housings, you can also use old perfume bottles, spice bottles or any other containers that look cool when illuminated from the inside.

Safety instructions

I know the following notes are always kind of annoying and seem unnecessary. Unfortunately, many people who knew "better" have lost eyes, fingers or other things due to carelessness or injured themselves. Data loss is almost negligible in comparison, but even these can be really annoying. Therefore, please take five minutes to read the safety instructions. Because even the coolest project is not worth injury or other trouble.

Wiring of the LEDs

First you start with the installation of the individual LED's in your chosen LED housing. In this example, the LEDs are installed in old plastic lamp housings. Here you can also use old perfume or spice bottles.
No matter what LED package you choose: Make sure that the LED package is firmly connected to the LED supply line so that no tensile forces act on the solder connections.

The “threaded side” of these plastic lamp housings has an inner diameter of 10mm,...
...which fits perfectly with the 10mm diameter of the LED boards of the WS2812 light chain.
The LED boards can therefore be inserted relatively easily into the lamp housing. Remember to pull the silver threaded deco over the supply line beforehand. So you can screw this - after you have inserted the LEDs - over the plastic thread of the lamp.
Before you do this, however, it makes sense to fix the LED board in the lamp housing with some hot glue and thus also insulate the contacts of the LED board.
After that, the whole thing should look something like this. With a little hot glue you now fix the supply cable in the threaded base so that there is also a certain strain relief.
Proceed in the same way for the remaining lamps. Both supply lines are fixed in the lamp base with hot glue.
View of the lamp housing including built-in LED.
If you have installed all LED boards in the lamp sockets it looks like this.
Last but not least, the connection cable at the last LED is exchanged for a longer one without connector.

Connection to an ESP8266 board

To control the color and brightness of the LED light chain, a microcontroller is absolutely necessary. To be able to set the color(s) of the individual LEDs later on, it is recommended to choose a microcontroller with W-Lan, like the ESP8266.
This costs very little and with the appropriate firmware - such as the Tasmota firmware - the color of the LEDs can later be conveniently set via a web menu.

So that the ESP8266 adapter board does not consume so much space in the height...
...it is recommended to cut off all pin headers with an electronic side cutter. This is not absolutely necessary but saves space 🙂 .
The supply line of the WS2812 light chain can then be soldered to the corresponding contacts of the ESP8266 adapter board. To do this, the white line (- or GND) is connected to pin “G” of the adapter board, the red line (+ or VCC) to pin “VU” of the adapter board and the green line to pin “D4” of the adapter board .

Nerdiwssen:

Pin “G” is the ground – i.e. the negative pole – of the supply voltage of the ESP8266 adapter board.
The pin “VU” is the supply voltage of the USB port of the ESP8266 adapter board. The 5V of the USB port is present at this pin.
Pin “D4” is one of the GPIO's of the ESP8266 adapter board. This can be used as a signal input and output, which is later configured in the software.

Here is another close-up of the ESP8266 adapter board with the wires connected.
Thus, your WS2812 light chain is already electrically functional. That means you can put the soldering iron aside again 🙂 .

Housing

Before programming the firmware, the ESP8266 adapter board is put into a suitable case. This not only looks nicer, it also protects the otherwise open contacts from contact with conductive objects.
You can print out a suitable housing like this one with a 3D printer. The file for this is available for download further up in the article.

To do this, glue the ESP8266 adapter board into the case with a few drops of hot glue.
Including the light chain, the whole thing should look like this.
The lid can then simply be put on.
The “construction work” is now over. Now let's move on to the software.

Before commissioning, you should now follow the tips from the article Eektronik - Commissioning of a new circuit note.

Flash Tasmota firmware

Now it is time to transfer the Tasmota firmware to the lamp. Program the Tasmota firmware on the ESP9266 adapter board. How to do this is described in the article Tasmota - Flash firmware  explained.

In the following a configuration as I have used it for this light chain. In this configuration you have to configure the access data to your WLAN and if necessary the access data to your MQTT server.

Configure Tasmota firmware

Once you have transferred the Tasmota firmware to the lamp, you can configure the lamp as follows.

Open the Tasmota configuration interface in a web browser of your choice.
then goes into the setting and...
Configure device menu
There you now have to tell the Tasmota device which pin you connected the WS2812 fairy lights to. In this case you have connected it to pin “D4” or “GPIO2”. So you click in the drop-down field and select “07 WS2812”.
To apply the setting you must now click on “Save”.
The Tasmota device then restarts and can be accessed again after a short wait.

Have fun with the project

I hope everything worked as described for you. If not or you have questions or suggestions please let me know in the comments. I will then add this to the article if necessary.
Ideas for new projects are always welcome. 🙂

PS Many of these projects - especially the hardware projects - cost a lot of time and money. Of course I do this because I enjoy it, but if you think it's cool that I share the information with you, I would be happy about a small donation to the coffee fund. 🙂
