HowTo: Find latitude and longitude of any position with GoogleMaps

There are a few cases where you have to find out the geographic coordinates of a particular location. For example, to calculate exact sunrise and sunset times at a specific location.

Of course, to find out these coordinates you could go to that place and then take the coordinates of your own GPS position. But there is an easier and even more comfortable way by doing it right from your own couch.

How to find the coordinates of any location in the world using Google Maps is described in this article.

Hints for our lovely english readers: Basically, many of the articles on are translations from the original german articles. Therefore, it may happen here and there that some illustrations are not available in english and that some translations are weird/strange/full of mistakes or generally totaly wrong. So if you find some obvious (or also not obvious) mistakes don't hesitate to leave us a hint about that in the comment section.
Also please don't get confused, that instead of a "dot" often a "comma" is used as decimal separator. 🙂

In the pop-up menu, click on "What's Here?".
As a result, an info box is displayed in the lower area in which the coordinates of the selected location are displayed.
After you have clicked on the coordinates in the info box, they are displayed in the search field area on the top left. Here the coordinates can easily be copied out by marking and copying.

The longitude is the number with the "E" behind it. In this case: 13° 22'34.0 "E
The latitude is the number with the "N" behind it. In this case: 52°31'07.5"N

Coordinates can be specified on different systems. Conversion is easily possible using online tools. For example, you can find a simple converter at

Have fun with the project

I hope everything worked as described. If not or you have any other questions or suggestions, please let me know in the comments. Also, ideas for new projects are always welcome. 🙂

P.S. Many of these projects - especially the hardware projects - cost a lot of time and money. Of course I do this because I enjoy it, but if you appreciate that I share this information with you, I would be happy about a small donation to the coffee box. 🙂
