After installing OpenMediaVault, the first thing you should do is activate HTTPS encryption for web access. This ensures that all data is encrypted with HTTPS when you access the OMV web interface.
You should activate this option, especially if you also want to access your OMV instance via a public network.

Before you start with this article you should have prepared the RaspberryPi so that it is accessible via the network and controllable via SSH.

Create SSL certificate under OpenMediaVault
You should activate HTTPS encryption especially if you are accessing via a public network. This could be the internet or an unencrypted WLAN, for example.
To do this, open the web interface of your OpenMediaVault installation.
Then click on the "System" tab and on the "Certificates" subcategory.
Then click on the "SSL tile" to first create an SSL certificate.
In the view that now appears, click on the plus in the top left-hand corner and then on "Create".
You will then be redirected to this view.
Here you can define the properties and descriptions of the certificate. The empty fields in the image are optional.
You can of course also set a longer certificate term.
Click on "Create" to apply the settings.
You must then confirm the changed configuration by clicking on the check mark in the yellow area and...
... take over another confirmation.
The creation of the SSL certificate is now complete.
Activate login to the web interface via HTTPS
After you have created the SSL certificate, you can now activate HTTPS encryption.
Now switch to the "Workbench" tab.
There you can select the SSL certificate you have just created.
You should also uncheck the
- SSL/TLS enabled
and
- Force SSL/TLS
set.
Then click on "Save" to apply the changes.
You must then confirm the changed configuration by clicking on the check mark in the yellow area and...
... take over another confirmation.
Test HTTPS encryption
To be able to access the web interface of your OpenMediaVault installation, you must call it up with a preceding https://. If the address of your OpenMediaVault instance is "omvtestserver", you must now enter
- https://omvtestserver
in the address of your web browser to access the web interface.
You will most likely receive this error message.
This is displayed to you because you are using a self-signed certificate (i.e. unknown to the browser).
In most cases, however, this is not dangerous. You can then clear the error message by clicking on "Advanced" and...
... Hide "Continue to...".
You should then be redirected to the OpenMediaVault web interface or login as usual.
