Now I'm starting an article for the second time in which I write about the fact that Nerdiy.de will soon be opening. The last article on this (https://www.nerdiy.de/was-soll-das-hier-was-mache-ich-hier-und-wo-soll-das-alles-mal-hinfuehren/) is already more than two years old. I also recently noticed that I registered the domain three years ago.
So you see: I've been working on this project for a long time.
At one point I was completely away from this idea. I quickly realized that it takes a lot of work to create and maintain a site like this. I'll be honest: I personally enjoy building, tinkering, developing ideas and further developing or optimizing implemented solutions.
But
If there were no “buts”, I wouldn’t be writing this text right now. 🙂
I believe that there is a lot of good in “doing it yourself”. We as people all over the world are currently facing many problems. Globalization is both a blessing and a curse. We are now realizing that we cannot continue to happily burn fossils and that the resources on a finite planet are actually finite.
You cannot solve all of these problems by “doing it yourself” alone. But you can support the solution with it. Every device that is repaired somewhere does not have to be rebuilt somewhere else. Every device that I can build myself at home using 3D printers and a little investment of time does not have to be transported to me via complicated and often resource-consuming logistics systems.
In short: If everyone were able to not only repair the equipment they need on site, but also build it, we could probably send five to ten fewer container ships across the world's oceans per month and per country. I wrote something similar (about two years ago) in this article: https://www.nerdiy.de/was-treibt-mich-eigentlich-an/
Nerdism connects
What I've noticed, especially in the last few months, is that nerds stick together. The hobby connects. No matter whether you are in India, Australia, Tristan da cunha or grew up anywhere else on our planet. The scientific basis for any project is irrevocably the same everywhere in the world. There is no language barrier in Ohm's law and no cultural differences in mathematical equations. Science has no prejudices.
The whole thing is (very recently) supported by the advent of 3D printers: An STL file that I drew and tried out in Germany can also provide useful (very probably even more useful) services in a developing country or crisis area.
Tool
All of these are reasons why I have now (finally) started this site and want to keep it running for as long as possible.
Not because I believe that the constructions I present here are “world-changing”. But maybe at some point, somehow, a genius who is able to do this will be “nudged” closer towards a world-changing invention by a reference to Nerdiy.de.
I already have one other items wrote that tools are needed to construct complicated machines. Without the invention of the Phillips screwdriver, no one would get very far in inventing a new device today.
If Nerdiy.de can be a small “Phillips screwdriver” (perhaps one for the very small screws) on the way to inventing the almighty world-saving machine, then I would be very happy about it.
It works
With this view, some may have already put me in the “Oh, he’s naive” category. But you can just see that this can work. (I am writing the article at a time when the Corona crisis has now gripped the world for a month).
Numerous designers all over the world have developed a wide variety of designs for face masks or “face shields” and made them publicly available. As a result, “FabLabs” around the world began producing these potentially life-saving tools.
Of course, this is not yet the “world-saving machine”. But I am sure that human lives were saved or protected as a result. And also that these protected lives are “world-saving” for many families. In this respect, these masks have not yet saved the entire world, but they have saved small (social) worlds in many families all over the world, saved suffering and helped to make the world better overall.
I would like to take part in such developments with Nerdiy.de and contribute to them.
Nerdiy.de
On Nerdiy.de you will probably notice that I almost only worked with pictures and very few videos to explain the corresponding projects and their structure.
My intention when writing the articles was (and is) always that they support a replica of the respective project as best as possible. Maybe this is subjective, but I don't think videos on this are ideal.
The ongoing playback always makes you feel somewhat rushed. The running progress bar often seems to me like a clock that keeps saying “faster, faster! You have to keep up. Build faster!”. I want to avoid this feeling when rebuilding. Everyone should – if they want – be able to recreate the projects at their own speed. The only thing that should drive him is the motivation to complete the project. Regardless of whether he is interested in the finished project or the construction process itself. But always at your own pace.
But I don't want to rule out the possibility of using a few videos in the future. I would also like to hear your opinion on this. What do you think about that?
Tips, improvement and advice
Actually a fitting transition to my next concern:
Some of the articles on Nerdiy.de were created during the day. Some while sitting outside on the patio. Still others (to fulfill a few nerd clichés here) while I was sitting at the desk in sweatpants at three o'clock on a Saturday night, lit only by the screen.
Accordingly, it may also happen that the quality of the items fluctuates somewhat. There are certainly still numerous spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or difficult to read “tapeworm sentences”. Sometimes maybe a “BLUUUB” or “BLAAA” in the place where there shouldn’t be any blub or blah.
Because sometimes, when I'm in the flow, I enter placeholders that I want to later replace with links or other information. And sometimes I forget exactly that. My translations are certainly not always perfect. So if you find any of these passages, please leave me a comment in the relevant article and I will correct the passage in question.
In some articles I have also entered placeholders where I will add information later. Simply because I didn't want this missing content to stand in the way of opening Nerdiy.de.
Current
Normally I only post finished building instructions for my projects on Nerdiy.de. If you would like to accompany me on the way there instead, you are welcome to follow me on mine Instagram or follow Facebook profile. There I regularly post updates about the creation, development and also the “fails” of my projects.

Thanks
Last but not least, I would also like to take this opportunity to say “thank you”. Thank you to all the people in my life who are important to me. For always supporting and encouraging me and my “creative side”. Who always helped and supported me through tips and advice and sometimes simply through distraction.
Because sometimes it's not the days of pondering over a problem, but rather the “coffee for two”, a beer with a friend or lunch with the family that suddenly makes you realize the solution to a problem.
Thanks.
Stay creative, positive and take a break every now and then
...I think that would be my advice if you asked me what you need to successfully complete a project.
I look forward to the coming time and would be happy to discuss problems and solutions, future or old projects and further developments with you.
Leave comments if you have any questions, writes me if you have ideas but above all “stay creative, positive and take a break sometimes”. 🙂
Until then
